FOOD OF THE EASTERN BLOC
Through the families my step father Jackiw Grunberg shared his journey with from his homeland to Australia , I was introduced at an early age to the filling and easy food of the Eastern Bloc .
The new residents to Australia kept in touch and met regularily to share food and stories of settling into their new country .
It is a cuisine very easy to fall in love with ...bowls of borscht a deep magneta soup that sticks to the spoon .
Pierogi a simple flour dumpling, piled with sour cream and horseradish .
Stuffed cabbage rolls leaking juice into a tomato broth .
Apart from the basic staples like flour , salt , sugar everything was homegrown .
